“Uzbekcoal”: Priority is quality over volume — mining policy is being updated

Questions and discussions have emerged in some media outlets and among certain activists regarding the reduction in coal production volumes compared to the previous year.
For reference, in 2025 the enterprise planned to produce 6.8 million tons of solid fuel, while the actual output reached 7.1 million tons of coal. For 2026, this indicator has been set at 5.7 million tons.
In response to the comments being raised, it should be emphasized that these changes are related to the implementation of a policy prioritizing quality over volume.
At present, “Uzbekcoal” JSC is focusing not on artificially increasing production volumes, but on expanding the share of high-quality, high-calorific coal. For this purpose, selective mining technologies are being introduced, and modern mining equipment is being gradually integrated into production processes.
In addition, the company currently has more than 1 million tons of coal in surface stockpiles, mined in the previous year. Its gradual sale will help compensate for the difference in production volumes and ensure the stability of the overall supply chain.
Overall, across Uzbekistan, coal production in 2025 amounted to approximately 8.9 million tons, with “Uzbekcoal” accounting for nearly 80% of the total output.
For 2026, the national coal production forecast is set at 9 million tons. This projection also takes into account the planned outputs of key industry producers, including “Uzbekcoal” JSC.
Thus, the policy of prioritizing quality over volume does not negatively affect national indicators; on the contrary, it contributes to increasing the share of higher value-added products.
